Trina’s Travel Diary

Before the First Real Day 1:20 AM. Twenty-nine degrees. Eighty percent humidity. The ceiling fan turns in slow circles overhead while Bangkok hums somewhere beyond the window. The city is out there being alive. I am in here being jet-lagged. And strangely at peace with that. The arrival post is finished and waiting for review. The photo is the one I wanted — blue hour settling over the city, carry-on at my feet, a sky shifting from violet to amber above a street I’d never stood on before. Chapter 5 is filed. Tonight isn’t for creating more. Tonight is for arriving. What I keep thinking about is the little 40-baht food cart two doors down. It was there when I arrived. It’ll probably be there tomorrow morning. That’s where the first real day begins. Not at a famous temple. Not on a tour. Not with a carefully planned itinerary. Just a walk to the corner. A look at what’s cooking. A first Thai coffee. A first attempt at understanding the rhythm of this neighborhood. Bangkok Survival Runs: Episode 1. The heavy clouds outside suggest rain. Everyone I’ve spoken to says the first Bangkok thunderstorm is unforgettable. Maybe it arrives tonight. Maybe it wakes me up. That’s alright. Some things should wake you up. For now, I’m going still. The city doesn’t need me to document every moment. It just needs me to be here. Tomorrow is for wandering. Tomorrow is for getting lost on purpose. Tomorrow is for learning the shape of these streets. Bangkok journey begins when I wake up.

How One Airline Check-In Experience Cost Us More Than $500 and Tested Our Patience By Damita Cleveland | LeJean Travels There are moments during travel that stay with you forever. Some become cherished memories. Others become lessons. For us, it started on a quiet drive through Albania. As we traveled toward Tirana Airport, we passed the familiar road signs pointing toward Tirana and Gjirokastër. We didn’t know it then, but that drive would mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. We were leaving Albania for Thailand. Our flights had been booked through Qatar Airways months in advance. Everything appeared straightforward. We had prepared our documents, arranged transportation, and planned carefully for traveling internationally as a family with mobility challenges and a toddler. What we didn’t plan for was what would happen at the airport. Everything Changed at Check-In When we arrived at Tirana Airport, we headed toward the ITA Airways check-in counters for the first leg of our journey. That is where things began to unravel. Before arriving at the airport, we had repeatedly attempted to check in online. We also tried to purchase additional baggage in advance. Neither option worked. Because our ticket originated with ITA Airways before connecting to Qatar Airways, we were directed back and forth between airlines with no clear answers. One airline pointed to the other. The other pointed somewhere else. Meanwhile, our departure time continued to get closer. The Surprise We Never Saw Coming At the check-in desk, we learned that additional baggage would cost significantly more than expected. Had we been able to purchase baggage online beforehand, the fee would have been dramatically lower. Instead, standing at the airport with no alternative and no way to leave essential belongings behind, we were faced with a choice: Pay the airport baggage fees or miss our flight. For travelers, that’s not really a choice at all. We paid. By the end of the process, the unexpected baggage charges totaled approximately $536.68 USD. What made the situation even more frustrating was that nobody seemed willing to take responsibility. ITA Airways pointed to the airport. The airport pointed elsewhere. Qatar Airways explained that the issue was outside their control. And we were left carrying the financial burden. The Cost Was More Than Money Travel has taught me that unexpected expenses happen. Flights get delayed. Plans change. Weather interferes. But this situation felt different. The most difficult part wasn’t the charge itself. It was the lack of transparency. As travelers, we don’t expect perfection. We simply expect the opportunity to make informed decisions. Had we been given accurate information beforehand, we could have planned differently. Instead, we arrived at the airport with no practical options. Moving Forward Anyway Despite the frustration, we boarded the flight. We made our connection. We landed in Bangkok. And eventually, what began as one of the most stressful travel days we’ve experienced became another chapter in our family’s story. Travel isn’t always beautiful. Sometimes it is messy. Sometimes it is expensive. Sometimes it tests your patience in ways you never imagined. Yet every journey still moves forward. That day reminded me of something important: You can spend your energy carrying frustration, or you can carry the lesson. We chose the lesson. A Note for Fellow Travelers If your itinerary involves multiple airlines on a single booking, especially when baggage policies differ, verify baggage allowances directly with every operating carrier before departure. Ask questions early. Document every interaction. Save every receipt. And if something goes wrong, don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself. We certainly did. Complaints were filed. Documentation was submitted. Now we wait. Whether reimbursement comes or not, our journey continues. Because that’s what travelers do. We keep moving forward. Where Movement Inspires Journeys. Update Complaints have been filed with both ITA Airways and Qatar Airways. We will update this article if either airline responds or provides reimbursement. Welcome to our Journey!

Welcome to our blog. This is where we will share our firsthand travel experiences as we navigate international travel while managing disability, chronic pain, and life with a toddler in tow. Life has not been easy for any of us. We’ve experienced our share of ups and downs, but through it all, God has seen us through. After retirement, I knew I needed a new adventure. I had always loved traveling, but never on the scale my family and I were about to embrace. We donated, sold, packed, and stored away most of our belongings. We downsized our entire 1,200-square-foot, two-bedroom apartment into six suitcases and fourteen storage boxes. Truthfully, even that didn’t feel like enough. We sold furniture, lamps, artwork, and countless items that simply wouldn’t travel well. At first, it was difficult. Many of those things carried memories and sentimental value. But eventually I realized something important: they were still just things. When we’re gone, those possessions become someone else’s responsibility. They become items left behind for others to sort through, donate, sell, or discard. Our lives are often defined by what we hold onto, but I made a different choice. I chose freedom. Today, I no longer look at furniture and possessions the way I once did. I value comfort and necessity over accumulation. As long as I have what I need, I have enough. Leaving Arizona was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made. Arizona had become home, but Pittsburgh will always be where my story began. It’s where my parents are laid to rest. It’s where my family, friends, memories, favorite foods, sports teams, and lifelong connections remain. After my mother passed away, everything changed. For the first time, I felt free to pursue opportunities wherever they might lead. I had always dreamed of living out West, and little did I know that God was already preparing that path for me. I simply had to trust the process. When my daughter suggested we drive across the country to Arizona, I thought she was crazy. Apparently, relocating to a state where we knew absolutely no one wasn’t adventurous enough. So we packed up the car and headed west. Like many East Coast families, we started with a AAA map spread across the kitchen table. Then we hit the road. Our journey took us through Ohio, Missouri, Tennessee, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and finally Arizona. We visited the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, stopped at Sweetie Pie’s, drove stretches of historic Route 66, and made memories that still make us laugh today. The trip wasn’t without challenges. We needed an oil change along the way and eventually discovered our cooling system needed replacement shortly after arriving in Arizona. Thankfully, it was still under warranty because Arizona’s 120-degree September temperatures were no joke. But we made it. Six years later, I retired. Most people think retirement is where the story slows down. For me, it’s where the real adventure began. Today, my daughter Dani, my granddaughter Brooklyn, and I are exploring the world together one destination at a time. We’ve traded certainty for curiosity, possessions for experiences, and comfort zones for growth. Some people call it being a digital nomad. I simply call it living. Thank you for joining us on this journey. I hope our stories inspire you to travel boldly, embrace change, and discover that it’s never too late to start a new chapter. Welcome to LeJean Travels. There’s more to Chapter 2 Greece 2023

When Hospitality Changes Everything Travel has a way of teaching lessons you never expected to learn. One of ours came in Athens. As first-time independent travelers in Greece, we didn’t fully understand the difference between a hotel and a hostel when booking accommodations. After spending our first night at the wonderful Hotel Melia Athens, we checked out and headed to what we believed would be our hotel for the remainder of the week. What we discovered instead was a hostel. The challenges began before we even entered the building. There were twelve steep steps leading to the entrance and no ramp. With multiple suitcases, personal belongings, and mobility limitations, simply getting everything inside became an exhausting task. There was no staff available to assist us. Once inside, the situation didn’t improve. The building felt old and musty. After checking in and making our way to our room, I immediately realized this wasn’t going to work. My room contained a single white plastic chair as seating. The bed sat directly on the floor, making it difficult for me to get in and out comfortably. The bathroom presented an even greater challenge. The bathtub was raised so high that I couldn’t safely step into it, and there was no separate shower option. I looked around the room and knew I couldn’t spend a week there. Instead of unpacking, I gathered my luggage, carefully carried everything back downstairs, and checked out. Then I made a phone call that changed the course of our trip. I called Hotel Melia Athens and asked for Georgis. Not only did he remember us, but he happily confirmed that rooms were still available. We pooled our money together and secured accommodations at Hotel Melia for the remainder of our stay. That decision transformed our Athens experience. The hotel offered accessibility, comfort, professional service, and most importantly, peace of mind. After a day spent navigating the steep pathways and uneven surfaces surrounding Athens’ historic sites, returning to a comfortable room made all the difference. Travel accessibility isn’t always about ramps and elevators. Sometimes it’s about people. Sometimes it’s about a staff member who answers the phone with kindness and helps solve a problem when you’re tired, frustrated, and unsure what to do next. For us, Georgis was that person. Years later, we still remember the Acropolis, the breathtaking views, and the ancient history. But we also remember the kindness of a hotel employee who helped turn a difficult situation into one of our favorite memories from Athens. Sometimes the people you meet become part of the destination.

Chapter 2 Greece 2023

Athens & Corfu: Beauty Beyond the Barriers April 2023 Opening Thought When people picture Athens, they picture history. They picture marble columns, ancient temples, and the Acropolis standing proudly above the city. What they don’t often talk about is what it takes to reach those places when mobility challenges become part of the journey. For us, Athens was both inspiring and exhausting. It was a reminder that some of the world’s most beautiful destinations still have work to do when it comes to accessibility. The Acropolis Reality Standing at the base of the Acropolis, we were excited. This was one of those bucket-list moments. The kind of place you’ve seen in books, documentaries, and travel magazines for years. What we weren’t prepared for was the physical challenge. The pathways were uneven. The ancient stone surfaces were worn smooth by centuries of footsteps. The inclines were steep. The stairs seemed endless. Every step required concentration. Every descent required caution. For travelers living with mobility limitations, chronic pain, balance issues, or fatigue, the Acropolis can quickly become less about sightseeing and more about endurance. Yet somehow, reaching the top made the experience even more meaningful. Not because it was easy. Because it wasn’t. Because we worked for every view. Lessons in Accessible Travel Athens taught us something important. Accessible travel isn’t only about ramps and elevators. It’s also about planning. It’s about knowing your limits. It’s about allowing extra time. It’s about giving yourself permission to rest when necessary. And it’s about understanding that sometimes the journey itself becomes part of the story. The Reward When we finally looked out across Athens from above, the city stretched endlessly into the distance. The white buildings. The hills. The Mediterranean light. The ancient ruins. It was breathtaking. Not because it was perfect. Because we had earned that view.

Chapter 1 Greece 2022

Santorini, Flying Dresses & 587 Steps October 2022 The Instagram Version vs. The Real Version If you’ve ever searched for Santorini online, you’ve probably seen the same images we did. White buildings. Blue domes. Crystal waters. Women standing in flowing dresses against impossibly beautiful skies. What most people don’t see are the challenges waiting before you ever reach the top of the island. For us, Santorini became one of the first lessons in what accessible travel really means. Arrival at the Old Port When our cruise ship arrived in Santorini, the view was breathtaking. The cliffs seemed to rise straight out of the sea. White villages clung to the mountainside like they had been painted there. What we quickly learned was that getting from the port to the town above was not simple. Travelers had three options: Option One: Walk Approximately 587 steep stone steps from the old port to the top. The path was narrow, crowded, and physically demanding. For travelers with mobility limitations, chronic pain, breathing issues, balance concerns, or simply limited endurance, this was not a realistic option. Option Two: Donkey The traditional Santorini experience. The same 587 steps. Just on the back of a donkey. While many visitors choose this option, it wasn’t the right fit for us. Option Three: The Cable Car This seemed like the obvious choice. The challenge? Everyone else thought so too. Twelve Ships, One Way Up On the day we arrived, multiple cruise ships had docked in Santorini. Thousands of visitors were all trying to access the island at the same time. The cable car only accommodated a handful of passengers per trip. The result was exactly what you’d expect. Long lines. Frustrated travelers. Limited shade. Rising temperatures. And a lot of waiting. We stood in the heat watching the line slowly inch forward while trying to conserve energy for the day ahead. For travelers managing chronic pain or mobility concerns, this wasn’t just inconvenient. It became part of the travel experience itself. The Lesson Nobody Talks About This was one of the first times we realized something important. Accessibility isn’t only about whether a destination has ramps or elevators. Accessibility starts long before that. It starts with transportation. It starts with understanding how you’ll get from Point A to Point B. It starts with knowing whether you’ll have the physical energy left to enjoy the destination once you arrive. Santorini taught us that beautiful places aren’t always easy places. Was It Worth It? Absolutely. The views were unforgettable. The Flying Dress experience became one of our favorite travel memories. The whitewashed buildings, blue domes, and endless Aegean Sea looked exactly like the postcards. But we left with something more valuable than photographs. We left with experience. The kind of experience that helps us plan future trips more thoughtfully and helps us share honest travel advice with others facing similar challenges. What We’d Tell Future Travelers If you’re visiting Santorini and have mobility concerns: The views will still be there. Final Reflection Santorini taught us one of the most important lessons in travel: Beautiful destinations are not always accessible destinations. But with preparation, patience, and realistic expectations, they can still become unforgettable experiences. And that lesson would help shape every journey we took afterward.
